The periodontics is the area of dentistry that deals with the study, prevention and treatment of the pathologies that affect the periodontiumwhich are the tissues that protect, surround and support the teeth: gingiva, alveolar bone, periodontal ligament and root cementum.
The periodontal lesions are caused by the accumulation of bacteria, which lead to alterations of the periodontium. If left untreated, these ailments progressively advance, can cause teeth to fall out and various afflictions in our organism.
The periodontal disease is a chronic pathology, which includes outbreaks with minimal symptomatology and which, if not treated in time, can lead to the death of the patient. loss of tooth attachment support, i.e. destruction of the gums and bone supporting the teeth.
There are 2 types of periodontal problems:
Gingivitis: this is the initial stage of periodontal disease, which is caused by the accumulation of plaque. Plaque is composed of bacteria and debris that adhere to the teeth. If not properly removed, it turns into tartar, which irritates and inflames the gums. The most common symptoms are reddening of the area and bleeding gums. Gingivitis is a reversible condition, but if not treated properly, it can progress to periodontitis.
Parodontitis: is a severe and irreversible periodontal disease which, unlike gingivitis, is characterised by structural loss of the attachment apparatus. Parodontitis is the main reason for tooth fall in adults.
Depending on the severity of the periodontal pathology in the patient, different types of treatment:
Prophylaxis: the early stage of the gingival condition is referred to as the gingivitis and, as it is the least serious, we can make it go away by means of a professional deep teeth cleaning. Our expert team will remove plaque and tartar deposits on the tooth surface and at the gum line.
Dental curettage: root scaling or root planing is the right treatment to eradicate Periodontitis, the most advanced stage of periodontal disease and the most dangerous. Through this treatment, it is possible to eliminate bacterial colonies lodged in periodontal pockets. It is a more invasive and uncomfortable procedure for the patient, which requires the prior application of a local anaesthesia, usually dividing the treatment into several sessions.
As you can see, there are special treatments to cure gum disease, but, as always, prevention is cure. Maintain a proper oral hygiene after each meal, avoid smoking, eat a rich and varied diet and regular visits to the dentist for a check-up. In this way, you will be taking care of your smile.
